Chris McMichen

Biography

Chris McMichen is the recently retired Director of Choral Activities and Fine Arts Department Chair at Union Grove High School, where he taught all choral ensembles and AP Music Theory.  He taught HS Chorus for 29 years.  He is currently serving as a Teacher Effectiveness Coach for Henry County Schools and the Minister of Music & Arts at Salem Baptist Church in McDonough.  In addition to his 22 years of teaching at Union Grove HS, Mr. McMichen taught at Mount Zion HS and Riverdale HS in Clayton County.  He holds the high honor of being named Teacher of the Year at each of these three high schools.  Mr. McMichen is an accomplished percussionist, active player and vocal soloist in the Metro Atlanta area.  He has also served as a GMEA LGPE and GHSA Literary adjudicator for over 16 years and was named a Head Adjudicator in the Choral division this past year.

Mr. McMichen’s ensembles have been praised for their consistent level of vocal excellence and for their depth of musical expression.  His choirs have won Superior ratings and Grand Champion awards in the cities of New York, Toronto, San Diego, Washington DC, New Orleans, San Antonio, Orlando and Myrtle Beach.  Mr. McMichen has served in numerous leadership roles for GMEA including State Choral Chair, District Six Chair, All-State Chorus Organizing Chair, District Six Honor Chorus Organizing Chair, District Six LGPE Organizer and founded and organized the All-State Sight Reading Chorus for our state.

Mr. McMichen holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Choral Music Education from the University of South Carolina where he received the Robert Van Doren Award given to the top graduating senior in the School of Music.  He also holds a Master of Music Education degree from Shenandoah University Conservatory of Music.  He is an active member of ACDA, GMEA and Phi Mu Alpha.  He is married to Pam and is the proud father of Cadence and Kendall.
