Jon Carmack

Orchestra Director, Dekalb School of the Arts

 

Biography

Jon Carmack has over 14 years of teaching experience and is currently the orchestra director at the Dekalb School of the Arts where he teaches orchestra and piano. Ensembles under his direction consistently earn superior ratings at Performance Evaluation and students frequently perform with youth orchestras along with participating in district honor orchestra and all-state. The DSA orchestra's recent highlights include side-by-side performances with the: Dekalb Symphony, Agnes-Scott College Orchestra , and Georgia College & State University Orchestra. They have also performed at the 2023 KSU Orchestra Invitational.

As a performer, Mr. Carmack currently plays with the Atlanta Wind Symphony and North Georgia Winds. Highlights of his performance career include: the Rose Bowl Parade, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Midwest Clinic in Chicago (2015 and 2021), GMEA In-Service Conference (4X), and the 75th commemoration of D-Day in Normandy, France in 2024.

Mr. Carmack was the teacher of the year for Double Churches Middle School for the 2016-17 school year. Current leadership roles include: NGW Horn Section Leader and GMEA District 4 Orchestra Chair. Conference Presentations include: GMEA In-Service Conference, GA Association of Art Educators, and Georgia Middle School Association.

Mr. Carmack holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Georgia Southern University along with an educational specialist degree from Valdosta State University. In his free time, Carmack can be found training for his next half marathon and spending time and traveling with his fiancee, Kaitlin, who is a high school band director.
