The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra opens its 2021/22 season with an eclectic program, created by Resident Conductor Jerry Hou, that shows off the depth of talent within these promising musicians.
First on the program is AMEN!, Carlos Simon's tribute to the musical experiences found in the African American Pentecostal church of his youth. These talented young musicians then present selections from Prokofiev's Suite No. 2 from the ballet Romeo and Juliet. Continuing the romantic themes, the ASYO plays local Atlanta composer Mark Gresham's orchestral piece from 1996, The Embrace. Closing out the concert is Italian composer Ottorino Respighi's Pines of Rome, a symphonic poem that depicts pine trees around the Eternal City at different times of the day, part of a trilogy of poems based on the city.
Performed in Atlanta Symphony Hall on November 6, 2021.
